Shutters
For centuries, shutters have been prized as fine window
furniture and a testament to a homeowner’s discerning
style and sophistication. The look is clean and the
design functional. The adjustable blades of shutters
enable you to control the amount of light penetration,
giving good blockout if required. You can control and
direct the breeze coming through you door or window,
they can also enhance the value of a home.
Like any home investment, only shutters
of exceptional quality will provide long-term value
and increase appreciation. This requires the finest
materials, handcrafting processes, advanced technology
and quality control systems.
A well – crafted shutter closes solidly,
does not have unsightly gaps, and stays that way year
in and year out. To accomplish this, each part of
the shutter must resist twisting, bowing, cupping
and all other forms of instability inherent to natural
wood.
NQ Blinds & Shutters sell a wide
range of internal shutters; western red cedar, basswood,
phoenixwood, finger joined timber, timber composites
and a full Polyresin Shutter. These are available
in several different mounting methods, hinged, fix
in position with adjustable blades, by-pass sliding,.
The cedar, basswood and phoenixwood are plantation
grown timbers. All of their blades are made from quarter
– sawn timber to ensure generations of durability.
In quarter – sawing, the wood is harvested from tree
logs in a way that makes it less susceptible to inherent
cupping, twisting and warping. Cuts are made parallel
to the medullary rays instead of across the medullary
rays; this method gives the wood remarkable strength
and stability.
Western Red Cedar Shutters
For centuries Western Red Cedar has been used to make
fine furniture. Its fine wood grain, warm tones and
rich colours ranging from light amber to deep honey
brown, infused with glowing red, and buttery yellows
together with a beautiful glossy clear lacquered finish
gives this timber a unique surface appearance that
flourishes with gentle care and attention. As well
as a clear lacquered finish there are some painted
options available.

ABS co-polymer material that is very tough compared
to the relatively soft Western Red Cedar and Basswood

PROPERTIES
ARTWOOD
Artwood is a man-made composite product
developed for, but not restricted to, moisture area
applications. It is made using a timber core, and
is encased in synthetic product called ABS (Acrylonitrile
Butadiene Styrene).
It is useful for moisture area applications, such
as bathrooms, kitchens, laundries etc., as moisture
coming in contact with the shutter soes not cause
any damage. Please be aware that although this product
is moisture resistant, it is not waterproof, and cannot
be used in exterior applications or in situations
where it would be subjected to long periods of water
contact.
Colour – Artwood is available in a range
of 6 standard paint colours. Being a synthetic product,
it is unable to be stained.
Colour Fastness – As Artwood is painted
only, it is not susceptible to colour change.
Hardness – Artwood is a very hard wearing
material, and is more resistant to knocks and bumps
than timber.
Warping – As this is a type of plastic
and is not susceptible to nay movement as timber can
be, warping is not an issue. In addition, the timber
used within the components of the panel is laminated,
giving it greater strength and resistance to sagging.
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
(ABS)
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
is made by copolymerizing (combing two or more monomers)
the monomers acrylonitrile (CH2CHCN) and styrene (C6H5CH9CH2).
Acrylonitrile and styrene are in polybutadiene rubber
[8CH9CH8CH9CH8] n, which allows these monomers to
form chains by attaching to the rubber molecules.
The advantage of ABS is that this material
combines the strength and rigidity of the acrylontrile
and styrene polymers with the toughness of the polbutadiene
rubber. Although the cost of producing ABS is roughly
twice the cost of producing polystyrene, ABS is considered
superior for its hardness, gloss, toughness, and electrical
insulation propertied. ABS plastic is injection moulded
to make telephones, helmets, washing machine agitators,
and pipe joints. This plastic is thermoformed to make
luggage, golf carts, toys, and car grills. ABS is
also extruded to make piping, to which pipe joints
are easily solvent-cemented.
